The Code of Good Practice on GHG emissions and reductions claims (the Code)

Label on wholemeal bread © Carbon Trust

Carbon Labelling enables companies to make claims about the GHG emissions associated with products and services (and subsequent emissions reductions) to help their consumers, stakeholders and business partners to make purchasing, investment and business decisions.

This document, therefore, is intended to help them communicate their claims in a robust, clear and consistent basis, with guidance on how to:

  • communicate the lifecycle GHG emissions of products clearly and credibly, on a consistent and comparable basis, and with sufficient supporting information; and

  • support claims relating to reductions in lifecycle GHG emissions associated with a specific product over time; and

  • report the degree of uncertainty relating to the accuracy of a footprint.

The Code has been developed by the Carbon Trust and the Energy Saving Trust, with the help of consultants Arup, OneWorldStandards, the Pacific Institute and E4Tech. The Code builds on the BSI Publicly Available Specification to assess the lifecycle GHG emissions of goods and services (PAS 2050) but is separate from it.
